The name means “Báine’s hill” and is recorded as early as 772. On the summit is a real Neolithic passage tomb, known as Annia’s Cove, its carved stones protected since 1959. William Carleton, who grew up nearby, set his tale of Fionn, Oonagh and the giant Cucullin here.
