The lore of places.

Why every hill, ford and lake is called what it is. Medieval scholars gathered hundreds of these place-legends in verse and prose. The Boyne, it says, is named for Boann, whom the water of Nechtan’s well chased to the sea. Every place on the map carries a little of it.

In the tales

  • Boann and the Secret Well Whoever looks into Nechtan’s secret well, his eyes burst. Boann walks three times round it to show it has no power over her, and the water rises.
