In Bricriu’s Feast, Bricriu builds his great house here in the likeness of the Red Branch at Emain Macha, with a grianán to watch the feast from. The place is identified with Dundrum in Co. Down, in Irish Dún Droma, “the fort of the ridge”. Its rocky hill looks south over Dundrum Bay to the Mourne Mountains. In the early thirteenth century John de Courcy built Dundrum Castle there, on top of an older fort, Dún Rudraige, a seat of the Ulaid.
