A long, narrow bay, about fifty kilometres from end to end, between the Iveragh and Beara peninsulas; in Irish today it is An Ribhéar. Under its old name, Inber Scéne, it is where the Book of Invasions brings its newcomers ashore: Partholón long before, and the sons of Míl on the first of May, when Amairgen set his right foot on the strand and sang. After his judgment at Tara they came back here to put out beyond the ninth wave.

In the tales

  • The Song of Amairgen A poet sets his right foot on Ireland and sings that he is the wind on the sea. Three queens of the old gods meet him, and each asks for the island’s name.
