The Voyage of Bran ends at a gathering here, at Srúb Brain, where Nechtan son of Collbran leapt ashore from Bran’s boat and fell to ashes. Irish Sagas Online identifies the place with Stroove, a townland beside Lough Foyle in Co. Donegal. Kuno Meyer knew of a second Srúb Brain, in West Kerry, and leaned towards that one. Its older Irish name, Srúibh Brain, may mean “Bran’s point” or “the raven’s beak”.

In the tales

  • The Voyage of Bran Music puts Bran to sleep, and he wakes beside a silver branch in blossom. He is gone a year, he thinks. At home he is already an old story.
