The same basalt columns rise out of the sea on Staffa. When Joseph Banks visited in 1772 he recorded it as the cave of Fhinn, Fionn’s cave, which became “Fingal’s Cave”. The Gaelic name usually given, An Uamh Bhinn, “the melodious cave”, was written down later. By 1832 people in Antrim were saying the causeway came ashore here.
