A treeless island about eleven kilometres off the north-west coast of Donegal, five kilometres long, with high cliffs at its eastern end; its name means “the place of steep rocky heights”. Tradition says that Colm Cille founded a monastery on it in the sixth century. In The Voyage of Máel Dúin, the old man clothed in his own white hair on a rock in the ocean was reared on Tory and was the cook of its church, until he sold the church’s food for treasure and dug treasure out from under its houses.

In the tales
